General Information

The Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) program supports research and research training in environmental and occupational health challenges in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). The goals of the program are to strengthen environmental and occupational health-related research collaborations, enhance research training, create relevant advanced educational curricula and outreach material, support research needed to identify and design mitigation strategies for the adverse consequences of environmental and occupational exposures, and inform nationally-relevant policy development in LMICs. A GEOHealth Hub is defined as a multidisciplinary group of researchers and their institutions based in a LMIC, who, with their collaborators, focus on a core set of common research and training topics that address environmental and/or occupational health priorities in the LMIC and/or the region. Hubs are supported by two linked awards to 1) a LMIC institution for research and 2) a U.S. institution for research training. Together, the GEOHealth Hubs form the GEOHealth Network, which can serve as a platform for coordinated environmental and occupational health research and research training activities.

The program is led by the Fogarty International Center in partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH).

There are seven GEOHealth Hubs supported by linked awards. Descriptions for each of these GEOHealth Hubs can be found here.

The 2023 annual network meeting will be held in virtual format (see logistics for details). Principal Investigators (PIs) of all GEOHealth hubs are expected to participate in the annual network meeting. Collaborators and trainees are also strongly encouraged to join.

Sessions will include GEOHealth hub presentations; trainee research (or planned research) presentations; discussion sessions on topics such as implementation science, equity in research, etc.; informational sessions by representatives from FIC Grants Management staff and other programs; and thematic breakouts to share information and discuss possible collaborations around research and/or training (e.g., joint training, distance learning, etc.).

Please send suggestions for additional sessions or presentations, and please volunteer for discussion sessions in which you would like to participate (e.g., give brief informal comments).

Each GEOHealth Hub should prepare a presentation that focuses on research progress and accomplishments. There will also be an opportunity for shorter trainee research (or planned research) presentations. (Depending on interest levels, the number and/or duration of trainee presentations for each hub may be limited.)

Presentation information, including the following, should be emailed to Christine Jessup (christine.jessup@nih.gov) and Austin Downs (austin.downs@nih.gov) by April 26, 2023

Presentations

GEOHealth Hub update presentations

Presentation length: 15 minutes

Presenters: Hub PIs (joint presentations are acceptable)

Each GEOHealth Hub (pair of linked U01 and U2R) will provide an update that focuses on research activities and/or planned research and that addresses integration of training activities.

In your presentation, please identify the research area your GEOHealth Hub is focusing on, why you are focusing on it, who you are working with, and where you are working. Please present highlights that may generate discussion and encourage collaboration. If there are other network meeting presentations associated with your GEOHealth Hub, please mention those presentations.

You may also address plans, challenges, experiences, or questions that you would like the rest of the network to consider.  Please share what you feel would be of most interest to those in the GEOHealth network.

This may be joint presentations made by both U01 and U2R PIs, but we strongly recommend one PowerPoint for each hub.

These presentations are limited to 15 min.  If the meeting is running as scheduled and the presenter stays within the 15 minute presentation time, there will be a couple of minutes for questions. There will be additional time for questions and discussion after all the presentations in each session.

Short Trainee/Collaborator Presentations

Presentation length: 5 minutes; maximum 3 slides

Presenter: Trainees, Former Trainees, Co-investigators, etc.

These short presentations will provide additional information on GEOHealth hub activities from trainees and collaborators associated with GEOHealth Hubs. The short presentations are intended to spark interest and further conversations during and after the network meeting.  Please concisely describe the topic, the focal issue or question, and how the research connects to broader conversations in environmental and occupational health.

To ensure a timely schedule, these presentations are limited to 5 minutes.

Submit presentations by Friday, May 19th

Our intention is for everyone to share their presentation live from their own computers. However, in case there are technological issues during the virtual meeting, we are requesting a copy of your presentation to have as a back-up to share if needed. Please follow these instructions to submit your presentation so that all presentations can be organized and shared with our meeting support team.

Please name your file with your last name, first name, and whether it is a hub update or research presentation.  (e.g., doe_jane_hub_update.ppt or doe_john_research.ppt).

Please email your presentation to Austin Downs (austin.downs@nih.gov) and Christine Jessup (christine.jessup@nih.gov) with "FIC/NIH GEOHealth Virtual Meeting Materials" in the subject line.

DEADLINE: All presentation files should be submitted by May 19th.
